“There is something exceedingly improving to the mind in a contemplation of the Divinity. It is a subject so vast, that all our thoughts are lost in its immensity; so deep, that our pride is drowned in its infinity...No subject of contemplation will tend more to humble the mind, than the thoughts of God.”
-Charles Spurgeon, sermon given on January 7th, 1855
Imagine yourself standing on a beach. Your feet are enveloped in soft, cool sand as the waves slowly wash over your toes. You look up and gaze out to each horizon, and you only see the deep and endless blue of the sea. At once you are struck by the paradox of the moment; you have, all at once, a clear knowledge of the nature of the ocean, and yet a realization that you can’t quite comprehend its expansiveness. The ocean is, at once, intimately knowable and yet seemingly endless. This same paradox is central to the Christian pursuit of knowing God in Christ. Paul describes this in Ephesians 3:14-21, when he prays that the reader may attain a comprehension of the love of Christ which surpasses all knowledge. What a glorious proposition! To encounter and know the endless love and grace of God, and yet never be satiated by its infinite nature, to always and forever be deepening our understanding of God’s love for us and for the world--that is a life full of unceasing wonder and overflowing joy. -CL
Prayer: Father, give me today a deeper awareness of your love. Reveal to me its breadth and length and height and depth, the love that gives me true life. Make me a vehicle for that love in a world longing for it. Amen.
